Frequently Asked Questions
All firearms received by GBB.org undergo a detailed inspection to determine safety and functionality. Guns that are deemed unsafe are dismantled/destroyed. Guns that are safe for use are processed for resale through the national network of federally licensed firearms dealers. 100% of these transactions require the completion of a federal background check.
A list of our Safer Communities charity partners can be found here or by clicking the “Donate” link on the menu bar. All charity partners are IRS-approved tax-exempt charitable organizations with low administrative expenses and a high percentage of donations going directly to promote safer communities.
We are licensed by the US Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to operate in all US states and territories. No matter where you live in the US, we can legally transfer your firearms to our organization.
From start to finish, your Buyback can be completed in as little as one day. Depending on where you live, shipping time is the biggest variable. Submitting your information to us takes just two minutes. Once your Buyback is approved, we will send you shipping labels and arrange a pick-up of your items the following business day. For even faster processing, you can drop off your items rather than waiting for pick-up. The day your items arrive at our facility, your Buyback Value Donation or Cash Payment will be released.
In order to send your guns to us, you must either be the legal owner or have other legal authority to act on behalf of the actual owner (such as a power-of-attorney or conservatorship). You can also assist the legal owner in completing a Buyback, as long as the legal owner is the person who signs our Bill of Sale.
If you chose the Cash Payment option, the day your Buyback arrives at our facility, you will receive an email from our bank with deposit instructions. You can select either a direct deposit or a paper check. Direct deposits are by far the fastest way to receive your cash, with funds available in your account either that day or the next business day, at the latest.
If you have any questions about the items you are submitting, please contact us at info@gunbuyback.org. We’ll be happy to help.
Prior to 1968’s passage of the Gun Control Act, serial numbers were not required on firearms. If your firearm(s) were manufactured prior to 1968, they are exempt from serial number requirements, and we can accept them. Firearms made after 1968 must contain a visible serial number. Any such firearms we receive that do not contain serial numbers will be destroyed and will lose their Buyback Value.
